Although every club is essential in scoring the best round possible on the golf course, irons are perhaps the most important. Irons are used for approaching shots from the fairway or rough, and they range from 200 yards to less than 100 yards. Considering that a majority of the shots you’ll take on a golf course fall between this range, it’s easy to see why irons are considered to be vital clubs. To help you understand the purpose of each club, here is a glimpse into the world of irons:
- Distance – The yardage gap between irons is generally 10 to 15 yards. Your 3-iron, for example, should produce shots that are 10-15 yards longer than your 4-iron. The specifics of this gap depend on the player, but the variation in distance should be consistent from club to club. Knowing this, you’ll be able to select the right club once you calculate the length of your shot.
- Loft – As you move through the set toward the shorter clubs, each iron will produce a bit more loft than the previous. A 6-iron, for example, has less loft, a shorter shaft, and produces shorter shots than a 5-iron, which has less loft, a shorter shaft, and produces shorter shots than a 4-iron. Loftier shots with a steeper trajectory tend to “stick” better than lower, straighter shots—in other words, the golf ball will tend to stay where it lands.
- Club Selection – Understanding that, in general, shots are higher and shorter as you move from the 3-iron to the pitching wedge will help you narrow down which iron you need for a particular shot. However, there are a number of other factors that go into selecting the right club. Weather conditions, hole location, and the speed and elevation of the green are just a few of the variables you will need to account for when selecting an iron.
The best way to familiarize yourself with the performance capabilities of each club is to get out and practice. Fortunately, Santa Teresa Golf Club is the perfect course at which to improve your swing and club selection. Santa Teresa features a beautiful par 71 golf course with wide fairways, fast greens, and strategically placed hazards. To schedule your tee time, contact us online or dial (408) 705-4983.
